Remember gathering around the television to watch family birthdays, holidays and those everyday moments that now mean so much? For many families, those memories are still tucked away on VHS tapes, waiting to be watched again.
As the years pass, VHS tapes can deteriorate, and finding a working VCR isn’t as easy as it once was. Those precious recordings deserve more than being left in a cupboard, especially when they capture people, voices and moments that can never be recreated.
Digitising your tapes gives those memories another chance to be enjoyed, shared with family and passed on to future generations.

What You Receive from Our VHS Conversion Service
We convert your VHS and VHS-C recordings into MP4 video files, delivered on USB or online as arranged when booking. Your original tapes are returned to you.
You can watch your files on a computer or compatible television, phone or tablet, make backup copies and share the recordings with family.
Standard conversion captures the picture and sound your tape can still provide. Optional restoration and enhancement can be discussed separately if you would like further improvements.
VHS to Digital Pricing and Turnaround
VHS and VHS-C conversion costs $30 for the first hour of recorded footage on each tape, plus $15 for each additional hour. We allow up to four minutes’ leniency at hourly boundaries.
For example, a tape containing 90 minutes of footage costs $45 to convert. A tape lasting 2 hours and 4 minutes also costs $45, while a tape lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes costs $60. Estimate your VHS transfer
USB storage, postage and any cleaning, repairs or optional enhancement are charged separately. Tell us how many tapes you have and their approximate running times, if known, and we can provide an initial estimate.
How Long Does Conversion Take?
Our usual turnaround is approximately 28 days or less, depending on the number and condition of tapes and our current workload. If you need your recordings for a birthday, anniversary or another important date, let us know when enquiring. Express service is available, subject to our workload and the condition of your tapes.
Our No-Result Guarantee
No result from any media = no charge.
Why Choose Moving Memories® for VHS Conversion?
Your family videos may be the only recordings you have of loved ones, childhood birthdays or moments you had forgotten. Choosing who handles those tapes deserves some care.
Professional Video Experience Since 1996
After years of producing video professionally and receiving increasing requests from past and existing clients to preserve their old home videos, Moving Memories® is bringing that same professional experience to VHS-to-digital conversion.
Professional Playback and Careful Capture
We use professional playback equipment, capture hardware and encoding software to transfer your recordings. The condition of the tape and the quality of the original recording affect what can be recovered. If cleaning, repairs or optional enhancement are needed, we discuss the options and additional charges with you before proceeding.
Based in Sydney, Serving Australia-wide
You can arrange a drop-off at our Earlwood studio by appointment or send your tapes by post from anywhere in Australia. If you are unsure what tapes you have or where to start, contact us and we will help you work out the next step.
DIY vs Professional VHS Conversion: See the Difference
Thinking about converting your old VHS tapes yourself? DIY equipment can produce usable results, but the playback equipment and capture settings can make a noticeable difference.
A customer contacted Moving Memories® after converting his own videotapes. He wasn’t satisfied with the results and asked us to transfer the recordings again.
We recaptured the footage using professional VHS playback equipment, time-base correction and the correct PAL settings. No AI enhancement, restoration or sharpening was applied.
Watch the Side-by-Side Comparison
This 23-second video compares the customer’s DIY conversion on the left with our professional transfer on the right. The original VHS recording is PAL, but the DIY version was captured at 29.97 frames per second. Our transfer uses PAL’s correct 25 frames per second.
LEFT: Original DIY Conversion | RIGHT: Moving Memories® Professional Digitisation
Why Professional Conversion Makes a Difference
This comparison uses genuine footage from a customer who initially attempted to digitise his own VHS tapes using an inexpensive capture device.
The DIY recording on the left was captured using incorrect NTSC settings rather than the tape’s original PAL format. This contributed to problems including incorrect picture proportions, unstable video synchronisation, horizontal picture tearing and colour banding.
On the right, you can see the same recording transferred by Moving Memories® using professional VHS playback equipment, time-base correction and the correct PAL capture settings.
Notice the more stable picture, correct proportions, improved colour reproduction and greater apparent sharpness and clarity.
What’s particularly important is that no additional enhancement or restoration was performed. The professional result demonstrates what can be achieved through a properly configured, high-quality VHS-to-digital transfer alone.
Optional video restoration and enhancement services are available separately, but neither was used in this example.
How Our VHS Conversion Service Works
1. Tell Us About Your Tapes
Let us know how many VHS or VHS-C tapes you have and their approximate running times, if known. Mention any visible damage, mould or particular requirements so we can provide an initial estimate and discuss the options.
2. Arrange a Drop-off or Post Your Tapes
You can drop off your tapes at our Earlwood studio in Sydney by appointment, or send them by tracked post from anywhere in Australia. Please contact us before posting your tapes so we can confirm the correct delivery details and provide any necessary instructions.
Include your contact details and a numbered list of your tapes, along with any instructions about their order or titles. Follow our packaging guidelines to help protect them in transit.
3. We Inspect and Convert Your Recordings
We inspect your tapes before playback. If cleaning or repairs are needed, we discuss the work and any additional charges with you before proceeding. There is no need to open or clean the tapes yourself.
We then transfer your recordings using our playback and capture equipment. Optional restoration and enhancement can be discussed separately.
4. Receive Your Digital Videos and Original Tapes
Your recordings are supplied as MP4 files on USB or online, as arranged when booking. Your original tapes are returned to you.
Check your files once received and keep backup copies in separate locations. We recommend retaining your original tapes as well.
Damaged or Mouldy VHS Tapes
A damaged cassette or visible mould does not necessarily mean your recording is lost. Let us know what you have noticed before attempting to play the tape.
Moving Memories® offers mould cleaning and tape repairs where suitable. Cleaning costs $30 per tape, and repairs cost $30 per tape, in addition to conversion. We assess the tape and discuss any required work with you before proceeding.
Do not play a mouldy tape or try to open the cassette yourself. Contact us so we can advise on the next step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Convert VHS-C Camcorder Tapes Too?
Yes. We convert both full-size VHS tapes and the smaller VHS-C tapes used in some camcorders. Both can be supplied as MP4 files on USB or online. If you are unsure which type you have, send us a photograph of the cassette and we can help identify it.
Will My Digital Videos Play on My TV or Computer?
We supply converted videos as MP4 files. These can be played on computers and compatible televisions, phones and tablets. Device support varies, so check your television’s USB playback requirements if that is how you plan to watch them.
What Should I Do Before Sending My First Tapes?
Make a simple list of your tapes, note any visible damage and let us know what you would like converted. You do not need to know the exact running time to make an initial enquiry. We can discuss the options and help you prepare your tapes for drop-off or posting.
